When They Tell You You’re "Too Much": Finding Your Electricity in the Dark

The story behind my latest painting, "Electric Night," and why your intensity is actually your superpower.

I remember the words clearly. Sometimes they were whispered, sometimes shouted in frustration, but the sentiment was always the same:

"You are too much." "You’re too intense." "Why do you feel things so deeply?"

For a long time, hearing that felt like a door slamming shut. And often, it was followed by exactly that. Another 'friend' walking out the door, another rejection, another reason to believe that to be loved, I needed to be smaller. Quieter. Less colorful.

Loss became a familiar theme in my life.

But recently, something shifted in the studio. I realized that the moments I tried to dim my light to make others comfortable were the darkest moments of my life. And I realized that what they called "too much" was actually my fuel. It was electricity. It was vibrant love and deep emotion waiting to be unleashed.

I decided to stop shrinking and start painting.

Enter: "Electric Night"

This 20"x30" mixed media piece is the visual manifestation of that realization.

I didn't shy away from the darkness when creating it. You can see deep indigos, heavy blacks, and chaotic layers of texture. These represent the times of doubt, the noise of rejection, and the messy timeline of healing (hinted at by the stenciled numbers peeking through).

But look at what happens against that dark backdrop.

Crashing through the shadows are electrifying jolts of bright teal, unapologetic magenta, and shimmering gold. They refuse to be swallowed by the darkness. They are the "electricity of LOVE and COLOR" that I finally allowed myself to feel.

I painted "Electric Night" for myself, but I also painted it for you.

It is an anthem for anyone who has ever been made to feel wrong for being exactly who they are. It is a reminder that your intensity is not a flaw; it is your power source.

Loss might be part of the story, but it is often what makes us the strongest we have ever been. You have to find that electricity within yourself in the dark times and bring yourself back to life with your unique vibrancy.
