My Journey from Guatemala, After Adoption, to the Canvas and Beyond

Artist Statement

My art is an invitation to embrace all facets of ourselves, the vibrant, the messy, and the raw.

It serves as a bridge between our inner landscape and our outer spirit.

I explore this connection through two primary expressions. It begins with biomorphic abstracts. These paintings are my exploration of the cellular world, the intricate, energetic patterns that form the roots of our being. They are visual meditations on the foundations of life itself and what moves within our bodies as we transition through life events.

This "inner" exploration is then given form through my work in abstract realism. The potent symbolism of animal guides emerges from this cellular energy, representing the wild, intuitive, and resilient spirit that is our authentic self.

This entire practice is born from my personal journey as a Guatemalan adoptee to two mothers in New Jersey. This experience has led me through a lifelong search for the threads of my identity and true connection. That search has become the heart of my work, where intuitive mark-making and vibrant color become a language for emotion, resilience, and the loving-kindness that guides us toward wholeness.

While rooted in my personal story, the paintings are created with intentional space for the collector’s own. The abstract cellular patterns become maps for the viewer's inner world, while the animal guides act as universal messengers. They are mirrors, intended to be a starting point for your own introspection.

I create for the deep feelers and the rebellious hearts—those navigating their own path back to themselves. My paintings are emotional anchors, visual reminders of the human spirit's resilience and the profound, loving connections that root us in our own truth.

My Process: Worlds Within Worlds

My art is a practice of discovery. I begin with intuitive layers, but my true process begins in the looking. I search the canvas for the spontaneous worlds that emerge from the paint. Many of these forms echo the microscopic life I study. Under the microscope I look at plant and human cells noticing the intricate shapes within us. They are universes within themselves

My signature mark-making, especially the recurring circle, is an act of validation. It’s my way of giving these hidden universes space to breathe, elevating them from chance to intention.

This process is a mirror of my own life. As an adoptee, my journey has been one of seeking, finding, and defining the "worlds within" that make up my own identity. The circle, for me, is the ultimate symbol of unity and belonging. It is of honoring all these found pieces and integrating them into a whole, new story.

Artist Bio

Cristina Link is a New Jersey-based mixed media artist whose work is a voice for the rebellious and introspective soul. Drawing from her own story of adoption from Guatemala to two women, a journey that shaped her understanding of resilience in a world that often fought against them, Link’s art serves as a powerful exploration of identity and authentic selfhood.

Her paintings are characterized by visceral mark-making and expressive color. Her work ranges from biomorphic abstracts that explore our inner cellular landscapes to potent animal guides and human forms that give that energy a-spiritual shape.

This intuitive approach is supported by a strong technical foundation, including a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The School of Visual Arts and a Master's degree in Art Education. As a certified yoga teacher and therapeutic art practitioner, she infuses her studio process with a deep sense of mindfulness and meditation, allowing each piece to emerge organically. Through her art, Link aims to create emotional anchors that remind viewers of their own inner strength and the profound connection we share with the natural world and each other.
